My name is Akosua Thornton and I am a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC). I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Women and Gender Studies with a minor in Sociology in 2010 from Oakland University. I then went on to obtain my Master of Arts in Counseling from Oakland University in 2013 also. I have experience working in several settings providing psychotherapy including adult mental health, working with children and young adults in the foster care system, youth mentoring, vocational, motivational interviewing, higher education and providing Transition of Care. I have provided individual, group, and family counseling. I have been credentialed as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) as well. I specialize in crisis intervention, suicide prevention, women, adjustments to life’s transitions, family dynamics, depression, anxiety and many other areas of concern. My approach to counseling is to get to the root of the issue to facilitate true and long-lasting change. I use a blended therapeutic treatment approach that combines different techniques from appropriate types of therapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, Play Therapy and Faith Therapy (per the client’s request), so that my clients will become whole and healthy, and will be able to have a life that is purposeful and filled with meaning. My main goal as a Counselor/Therapist is to provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment that will foster change. By working with an individual, I can help promote one’s self-esteem, relationships, and outlook on life.
